Car Shipping Pickering, Auto Transport Ontario

Pickering, immediately east of Toronto in the Durham Region, was a settlement of British colonists in the 1770s. Most of its growth has come since the end of World War II from immigrants around the globe. The 2011 Census population was 88,721.

Following their defeat of the French in the French and Indian War, the British completed survey of the township about 1776; in the 1813 census, Pickering had 180 residents. Quaker migrants from the eastern USA arrived during the early 1810s. The main thoroughfare at that time was the Kingston Road from York (Toronto) through the southern part of the Pickering township.

Pickering experienced substantial growth in the second half of the 20th Century. Toronto’s ongoing growth fed Pickering’s. Between 1996 and 2001, the municipal growth rate of 10.3 percent (78,989 to 87,139) slowed considerably between the 2001 and 2011 census due mainly to development restrictions to contain sprawl. Negotiations to permit development in this area are underway.

The southern, mainly suburban part of the city has industrial areas around the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station. Squires Beach on the lakeshore is a ghost town. Another abandoned ghost town, Altona, is in the northern part of the municipality, a mainly rural and agricultural area.

The Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, an eight-reactor facility with a capacity of 4,120 megawatts, opened in 1971. Ontario Power Generation (OPG), the operator, is Pickering’s largest employer. In 2001, the wind-powered OPG 7 Commemorative Turbine opened on the generating station site. Other major employers are Yorkville Sound, which manufactures audio equipment, the Canadian headquarters of Purdue Pharma, Hubbell Canada, manufacturer of electrical equipment, and Eco-Tec Inc. In 2006, Profit magazine included Pickering among Canada’s top ten cities for growing a business.

The Pickering Government of Ontario (GO) station operates public rail transit to Toronto and points beyond on GO’s numerous radiating lines. In 2012, Pickering’s landmark bridge opened to connect the Pickering GO station to the downtown core.
