Honda

The circumstances under which Honda came into existence may not be strange, but were very difficult. The consequences of the Second World War were very devastating to Japan. There were a lot of destruction and this meant that a lot of rebuilding was also needed. The auto industry in Japan was adversely affected, as most of the companies had to convert so that they meet the demands for military aircrafts and vehicles.

The gaps created by the war had to be filled quickly and this is what Honda noticed and moved in quickly to take the necessary step that would later see the growth of the fifth largest automobile manufacturer on the entire planet. The company was founded in 1948 by Soichiro Honda and its timing was very perfect, given that many bike and car manufacturing firms were still reeling from the aftermath of the war.

With the aim of developing a cheap but indispensable vehicle, Honda decided to strap an engine onto a bike to provide a very efficient means of movement. Affordability and versatility was the main cornerstone that led to the company’s incredible growth in the next ten years. It would see the company expand its wings to open plants in America, after which world domination come naturally as several plants were started in different countries across the globe.

Sensing that Honda would be big, Soichiro began developing a new standard in car production quality and this combined with his ruthless takeover of markets, he had a powerful tool that obliterated any competition that dared to face him.

The brand would later be recognized mainly due to its versatility and innovative engineering. The motorcycle division witnessed a tremendous growth in sales and by the 1970s; Honda was the world’s leading motorbike maker.

The production of cars which had begun in the 60s was however slowed down since most of the focus was on the motorcycles. Though it entered motor sport competitions, the cars did not do a good job in impressing the average American drivers and so it never thrived well on the tracks. Again, since the cars were designed for the Japanese market, the small sized cars did not appeal much to the Americans who preferred large vehicles.

In an attempt to meet the demands of the Americans, the company launched an American oriented civic, a model that was slightly larger than the previous releases. Though still small compared to other American cars, it was the first car by the company to attract the attention of the American buyers.
