Car Shipping Welland, Auto Transport Canada

Welland is in the Niagara Regional Municipality. Its 2011 Census population was 50,631. The Welland River flows through the city from southwest to northeast, and the Welland Canal linking lakes Erie and Ontario bisects it from south to north.

The first Welland Canal reached Lake Erie in 1833. A wooden aqueduct carried the canal over the Welland River at what is now downtown Welland. A small shantytown developed around the aqueduct for essential services.

The growing town was later Merrittsville after William Hamilton Merritt, initiator of the Welland Canal project. This name remains today in the Merrittville Highway, the primary north-south route before construction of Highway 406. Welland gained its present name when it incorporated as a town in July 1858. It became a city in 1917.

The canal itself and its Welland railway crossing contributed to the development of heavy industry. Plymouth Cordage was the first major industrial company to open a plant in Welland in 1906. By the 1930s, Welland was an important industrial location.

In the 1960s, the city outgrew the canal passing through it. The Welland By-Pass opened in 1973 as a shorter alignment removing the canal from downtown Welland to the city outskirts. With the bypass, the east end of Welland became a virtual island between the new and old canal channels.

With proximity to the hydroelectric station at Niagara Falls, Welland was able to develop steel, automotive, and textile industries. Manufacturing firms Union Carbide, United Steel, Plymouth Cordage, three drop forges, a cotton mill, and Atlas Steel shaped earlier Welland as major employers, and Lakeside Steel, a pipe plant, continues to employ Welland residents. With its large francophone population and widespread bilingualism, the city has been able to bring in several call centers. One, Canadian Tire Financial Services, Welland’s largest, employs over 1,600.

Highway 406 is the main route out of Welland north to Thorold and St Catharines and on to the Queen Elizabeth Way to Hamilton and Toronto. No passenger trains serve Welland. The closest intercity passenger rail stations are in St Catharines and Niagara Falls. Amtrak operates two trains at these stations under Via Rail auspices.
