Car Shipping Thorold, Auto Transport Ontario

Thorold on the Niagara Escarpment is the seat of the Regional Municipality of Niagara. The 2011 Census reported a population of 17,931, down slightly from the all-time high of 18,224 in the 2006 Census. The Welland Canal passes through the city; the Twin Flight Locks downtown attract thousands of tourists annually. Thorold incorporated as a village in 1850 and as a town in 1870. When the Regional Municipality of Niagara formed in 1970, Thorold annexed the Thorold Township and in 1975 incorporated as the City of Thorold.

Besides the canal, Thorold is notable for several other impressive historical sites. The Maplehurst mansion on the highest point in the city has a commanding view of the community. Built in 1885, this red stone structure with elaborate gables and dormers has been a residence, a hospital, a private nursing home, and now, as the Keefer Mansion, a 10-room inn famous for dining. Beaverdams Methodist Church and Burying Ground, constructed in 1832, is the oldest Methodist Church in Ontario. Soldiers’ Monument in Memorial Park commemorates “the Men of Thorold who gave their lives for the cause of freedom in the Great War.” The Old Public Library, one of 156 Carnegie libraries in Canada, opened in 1912. The building is now the Thorold Seniors Center.

The Thorold Tunnel, an underwater vehicular tunnel that opened in 1967 to allow Highway 58 to cross the Welland Canal without interrupting shipping, is the longest tunnel in Ontario. In 1829, the first vessels sailed the canal from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie. The canal was 27 miles long and had 40 wooden locks.

Deterioration of the wooden locks and the increasing size of ships on the Great Lakes demanded a bigger and better canal. The government purchased the Welland Canal Company’s assets and completed construction by 1845 with 27 locks of cut stone. The second canal was a feature of downtown Thorold until the 1960s.

The third Welland Canal by-passed downtown Thorold to the east. Mills lined the first two canals, but government policy kept the banks of the Third Canal free of industry. Construction began on the fourth canal in 1914, but because of wartime delays it did not open until 1932. There were now eight concrete locks, three of which, including the Twin Flight Locks, are in Thorold.
