In June 2007, Essar Group of India purchased and acquired control of Algoma Steel, which then became Essar Steel Algoma.
Forestry is also a major local industry. Flakeboard employs over 110 people, and a melamine factory manufactures products with Flakeboard materials. Together Flakeboard’s factories employ about 150.
Highway 17, a regional segment of the Trans-Canada Highway, connects to Thunder Bay to the west and Sudbury to the east. The city no longer connects by intercity passenger rail, but the Algoma Central Railway network runs north to the small town of Hearst.
