Car Shipping Sarnia, Auto Transport Ontario

Sarnia, the largest city on Lake Huron, is on the eastern or left bank of the St Clair River across from Port Huron, Michigan. The city had a 2011 population of 72,366, nearly constant since 1992, when the municipal expansion caused a 45-percent increase to 74,167 from 50,829 in 1981.

In its natural harbor, the Sarnia port remains an important center for freighters and oceangoing ships carrying cargoes of grain and petroleum products. The natural port, the salt caverns in the area, and the oil in nearby Oil Springs led to development of the petroleum industry. The complex of refining and chemical companies, Chemical Valley, is south of downtown Sarnia. The city has the highest level of particulate air pollution of any Canadian city.

“Sarnia” is the Latin name for Guernsey, a British Channel Island. In 1829 Sir John Colborne, a former governor of Guernsey, became Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada. In this capacity, he visited “The Rapids,” where the residents wished to change the name but could not agree on an substitute. Sir John, recalling his former post, suggested Port Sarnia.

Port Sarnia expanded throughout the 19th Century; in 1856 the residents incorporated the Town of Sarnia. There were then 1,000 inhabitants. The stands of timber, the discovery of oil in Oil Springs, and the arrival of the railroads all stimulated the city’s growth. The rail lines connected to the USA when the St Clair Tunnel under the river opened at Sarnia in 1890, the first ever railroad tunnel under a river and an engineering marvel of the time. By 1914, when Sarnia officially became a city, the population had grown to 10,985.

In January 1991, Sarnia and the neighboring town of Clearwater merged as the new city of Sarnia-Clearwater. In January 1992, the name went back to Sarnia.

The waterway between Detroit and Sarnia is one of the world’s busiest; an annual average of 78,943,900 tons of shipping travelled the river in both directions during 1993–2002 at the rate of about one ship every seven minutes. The Tellier Tunnel, which handles double-stacked rail cars, began operation in 1995 next to the 1890 tunnel, which now is sealed.

From Sarnia Chris Hadfield Airport, Air Georgian flies to and from Toronto Pearson International Airport on behalf of Air Canada Express. For rail travel, Sarnia is one of the two western termini of the Via Rail Quebec City – Windsor Corridor.
