Ottawa on the right bank of the Ottawa River in southeastern Ontario is the national capital and the fourth largest city of Canada. Founded in 1826 as Bytown and incorporated as Ottawa in 1855, the city has become a political and technological center of Canada. The name “Ottawa” is Algonquin, meaning “to trade.” Originally an Irish-French settlement, the city has become a cosmopolitan city with a diverse population. The 2011 Census reported it as 883,391. In 2012, MoneySense magazine rated the city for the third consecutive year as the best community in Canada in which to live.

Bytown, Ottawa’s early name, was founded in 1826 by workers on the Rideau Canal overseen by Colonel John By. The canal was to secure a route from Montreal to Kingston on Lake Ontario bypassing the St Lawrence River segment along New York State. Colonel By laid out the streets of the “Upper Town” and “Lower Town” separated by the canal. Bytown’s name changed to Ottawa in 1855, when it incorporated as a city.

In December 1857, Queen Victoria chose Ottawa as the Canadian capital for several reasons. The city’s back-country location made it defensible with still easy transportation on the Ottawa River, the city was almost exactly midway between Toronto and Quebec City, and it was less prone to political mobs that had disturbed previous Canadian capitals. In 2001, the province terminated all twelve area municipalities and merged them into a new incorporation of the City of Ottawa. Across the Ottawa River, the Ontario-Quebec provincial border, the City of Gatineau is the product of a similar merger with the former cities of Hull and Aylmer. Although separate cities in different provinces, Ottawa and Gatineau constitute the National Capital Region.

Several airlines fly into the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport and two regionals, the Gatineau-Ottawa Executive Airport and the Ottawa/Carp Airport. Via Rail operates inter-city passenger rail service at the Ottawa Train Station, and inter-city bus service operates from the Ottawa Bus Central Station. The Trans-Canada Highway as Highway 417 connects central Ottawa to Montreal, as Highway 17 to Sudbury and points west, and as Highway 7 to Peterborough, Toronto, and on to Niagara Falls and Detroit. Highway 416 connects Ottawa to the rest of the Ontario 400-Series highway network.
